Photo by James Dow. 135 Street at 109A and 109B Avenue Designed by Wallbridge and Imrie Architects The architecture of the North Glenora Patio Homes was simple and stylish for the time. The Early Modern style of domestic architecture is typified by the use of long, low horizontal composition, flat roofs and white stone or stucco cladding. Other Modern features include the cement parging to imitate stone, projecting single-storey entrances that were clad in painted 8″ bevel wood siding, and the use of glass block which was installed above the entrances. Decorative screens provided privacy between the separate home entrances under a projecting canopy. Corner windows brought light into homes with broad roof overhangs providing weather protection.  Photo by David Murray As a firm, Wallbridge and Imrie were unusual in that they did most of their work in domestic architecture. They were early women in the field, and were also early in creating spaces in smaller homes, often in structures that were apartments or other multiple-family dwellings. |
